For most undergraduate programs, The New School accepts up to 84 transfer credits toward the 120-credit bachelor’s degree.
Below, you’ll find everything you need to understand how transfer credit works.

You may transfer up to 84 credits into most undergraduate programs.
This total may include:
College coursework completed at another regionally accredited institution
Military education (JST or CCAF)
CLEP or DSST exam credit
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
AP Scores
All students must complete a minimum number of credits at The New School (residency requirement). Depending on your program it can be 36 credits to 60 credits. Your advisor will explain how this applies to your specific program.

We evaluate:
Courses completed at regionally accredited colleges or universities
Military education and training documented on official transcripts (e.g. Joint Service Transcripts, Air Force Community College, etc. )
CLEP and DSST exam scores
Approved CPL portfolios (where available)
AP Scores
Courses must meet minimum grade requirements (typically a C or better) and align with college-level academic standards.
Transfer credits post with a grade of TR and do not affect your GPA.

A Joint Services Transcript (JST) is an official academic record of your military training, coursework, and occupational experience. It translates your military experience into college-level credit recommendations using American Council on Education (ACE) standards.
JSTs apply to:
Army
Navy
Marine Corps
Coast Guard
If you served in the Air Force, you must request a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript instead.
Military training does not automatically convert to credit. It must align with academic standards and your degree requirements. Submitting your JST ensures your experience is fully reviewed.

Requesting Your JST
Visit the official JST website.
Log in using your CAC or DS Logon.
Search for and select The New School as the recipient.
Submit your request for official electronic delivery.
Your JST must be sent directly through the JST system to be considered official.
Separated veterans who no longer have CAC access can log in using a DS Logon account. If you do not have one, you can create it through the VA’s DS Logon registration process.
Requesting Your CCAF Transcript (Air Force)
Submit a transcript request through the CCAF transcript system.
Select The New School as the receiving institution.
Ensure delivery is official (electronic or sealed).
Unofficial copies may be used for advising, but official transcripts are required before credit can be posted.

CLEP, DSST, and DANTES Exams
If you completed exams through DANTES, including CLEP or DSST:
Exams must meet minimum score requirements
Official score reports must be sent directly from the testing agency
Exam credit counts toward the 84-credit transfer maximum
Exam credit is evaluated based on established academic guidelines.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students in eligible programs to demonstrate college-level learning gained through professional or experiential work.
CPL may require:
A portfolio submission
Faculty review
Department approval
CPL is not available in all programs. Approval is determined through academic evaluation.

You may submit unofficial transcripts during the application process for review.
Official transcripts are required only after you are admitted and choose to enroll. Transfer credit cannot be finalized or posted until official documents are received.

CLEP or DSST testing agencies
An official transcript is one that:
Is sent directly from the issuing institution, or
Is delivered through an approved electronic transcript service
Transfer credit evaluation begins after admission and receipt of all required official documents.
