We are a diverse university, and we are committed to being an inclusive environment for your entire family.

We know that navigating military education benefits can be complex, so we are here to help you demystify the process. Our team can guide you through how to apply for VA educational benefits (if applicable) and, more importantly, how to apply those benefits toward a degree at the university. From your first question to your student's first day of classes, we are here to ensure you have the information you need.

Welcome to the community

Next Steps for Admitted Students

Congratulations on your student’s admission to The New School! This is an incredible milestone, and we recognize the vital role you play in supporting their journey toward a creative and purposeful future. We understand that you likely have questions about the transition ahead, and we are committed to addressing your concerns and helping you guide your student through the enrollment process.

    • To join our community, all admitted students must confirm their intent to enroll by logging in to the application portal and filling their Admission Reply Form. As a military-connected student, the deposit fee usually associated with confirming attendance is waived for you. We encourage your student to submit their form as soon as possible; this allows us to begin the necessary process to certify their benefits (if applicable) and ensures a smooth transition to the university.

  • Navigating military education benefits involves a few specific steps. We recommend starting this process as soon as possible to ensure your student’s funding is in place before the semester begins. While the application process is straightforward, the VA wait time for approval can be lengthy.

    • Follow these steps to secure and apply your benefits to the university:

      Secure Your Documentation:

You must obtain a Statement of Benefits (from website) or a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) (via mail). This document is provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) after you apply for your benefits. If you do not yet have a COE, please apply through the VA immediately, as you should not wait until classes start

Submit Your COE to the School Certifying Official:

The Center for Military Affiliated Students (CMAS) processes all certification requests to the VA. While we cannot certify students until they register for classes, it is important to submit your COE to CMAS when you confirm your attendance. This allows us to flag your account and coordinate with Student Financial Services and the financial aid office if needed

      Register For Classes:

Your student will receive communications from CMAS, in addition to communication from Admissions, regarding important dates and deadlines. It is vital to adhere to these deadlines so we can process the certification request with the VA and post any benefits paid to the school directly to the student account. This ensures benefits are applied toward the tuition and fees ahead of time, leaving only the remaining balances to be billed on your invoice

    • The way benefits are applied depends on the specific benefit your student is using:

      Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

This benefit pays tuition and fees directly to The New School. The Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is paid directly to the student

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)

This benefit provides a monthly stipend paid directly to the student. Please note that this benefit is not posted to the student account in advance

    • Maintaining your student's account is a straightforward process, and we are here to help you understand the billing timeline to avoid any unnecessary stress. All invoices are sent electronically to students at their New School email address. If your student submits their Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the Center for Military-Affiliated Students on time, any VA benefit paid directly to the university—such as the Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)—will be posted on the bill in advance. This allows you to see only the remaining applicable balances, such as housing and meal plans, which are not covered by the VA.

The New School is proud to be a 100% Yellow Ribbon school. For military-connected students who qualify, the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship covers all tuition and fees not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill®, essentially reducing out-of-pocket tuition costs to zero dollars. Students do not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship; all eligible students are automatically enrolled once they submit their COE to the Center for Military-Affiliated Students.

To help manage these remaining costs, the university offers an interest-free monthly payment plan that allows you to spread out the cost of attendance. This payment plan can be scheduled to align with the VA payout schedule for your convenience. For more information on setting up your plan or coordinating your payments, please contact CMAS or the Office of Student Accounts.

    • To register for classes, your student will need to meet with an academic advisor who will guide them through their course selection. Once a student confirms their intent to enroll by submitting their Admission Reply, your child will receive an email introducing them to their advisor and providing specific registration details. It is essential that they check their New School email account regularly, as all official university communications are sent there.

As a reminder, the university cannot certify a student with the VA until they are officially registered for classes. Therefore, it is important for students to stay proactive by checking their email and scheduling their advising sessions promptly. To support this, the Center for Military Affiliated Students (CMAS) works closely with the advising teams to ensure they are aware of certification deadlines and can schedule advising sessions accordingly. This is another reason we encourage you to submit the Intent to Enroll form as early as possible—it allows us to begin the work needed to secure your student's benefits.

    • As your student joins our community, it is important to understand the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, commonly known as FERPA. This federal law protects the privacy of student education records and generally prevents the university from discussing billing, grades, or any other specific student information with anyone other than the student. Please be aware that this privacy protection also extends to VA educational benefits, even in cases where those benefits have been transferred from a parent or guardian.

    • We recognize that you are an essential partner in your student's success, and students can elect to grant parents or guardians access to specific information. Through the student portal, your student can authorize the release of details pertaining to their billing, financial aid, and VA education benefits. For more information regarding these regulations, we encourage you to visit our website, which includes a comprehensive Guide to FERPA for Parents.
