Tuition Assistance Program

The New School participates in Department of Defense Tuition Assistance (TA) programs. We liaise with the Department of Defense in processing TA and other military educational benefits.

Tuition Assistance programs may be offered through the various branches of the military. For more information on these programs, students should contact their unit's Education Service Officer (ESO). Eligible service members should receive approval from an ESO or counselor within the military service before enrolling.

Other Financial Resources

Eligible students may qualify for several other forms of aid whether or not they are using Tuition Assistance or VA Educational benefits. We encourage all U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens to apply for federal student aid using the FAFSA®. The New School code is 002780

Additional Information

Military Leave of Absence & Readmission

The New School is committed to assisting reserve/guard military students who are pursuing their educational goals. Military students will be eligible to extend their leave for the duration of their service. More information can be found at Policies: A-Z under Military Leave of Absence or contact the Center for Military-Affiliated Students for assistance.

Return of Unearned Military Tuition Assistance

TA is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student using military tuition assistance withdraws, they may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded. To comply with the U.S. Department of Defense policy, The New School will return any unearned TA funds on a proportional basis through at least 60 percent of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds will be returned to the service member’s branch of service (the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, or Air Force). In instances when a service member stops attending because of a military service obligation, The New School will work with them to find solutions to avoid student debt for the returned portion.

Recruiting, Marketing, & Advertising

The University does not, and has never, conducted fraudulent or aggressive recruiting on or off military installations or in any other venue, nor do we misrepresent ourselves, our programs, or our mission. We do not pay incentive compensation to anyone for recruiting actions. We meet all state authorization requirements and perform yearly program auditing by the New York State Accrediting Agency.

The New School prohibits high-pressure recruitment tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (3 or more), including contacts by phone, email, or in-person, and engaging in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing service member enrollments.

Accreditation

The New School has been accredited by Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1960. All degree programs at the New York City campus of The New School are registered by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED). Both NYSED and MSCHE provide assurance to students, parents, and all stakeholders that The New School meets clear quality standards for educational and financial performance. In addition, the appropriate professional educational agency or board accredits professional curricula at The New School. For more information about accreditation visit The New School’s Accreditation webpage.
